Brazilian Firm Kels Sets Up Location in Henrico

Brazilian Firm Kels Sets Up Location in HenricoIt’s a relationship that began in Germany, and it was strong enough to ultimately bring Kels, a Brazil-based electrical materials company, to Henrico County.

Rafael Marcussi, Kels Vice President of New Operations, explains the company’s rationale for its choice of location: “The Richmond region was chosen because of the relationship we started with the Greater Richmond Partnership (GRP) in 2012 in Germany, and all the information and services the Partnership provided before our decision.” The Henrico County Economic Development Authority partnered with the GRP on a mission to Hannover Messe in Germany, where discussions were initiated with Kels.

Kels, founded in 1976, manufactures metal-based products for the electro-electronics, automotive and appliance industries. The company also supplies brazing alloys for the refrigeration, tooling and metalurgical industries.

Kels chose a location on Sadler Road in Henrico County for its sales office, where the team will be well positioned to tap new markets while serving its current customer base. The plan is that the firm will eventually move to manufacturing products here in the U.S.

“We’ve been at the Sadler Road location for about 14 months,” says Marcussi. “We opened this office in the U.S. to start prospecting and increase sales in the North American market. We’re planning to expand our business in the U.S. as soon as we reach our goal in sales, which is approximately $2 million per year.”

Kels announced in February that it plans to invest up to $7 million in the expansion and hire 100 people by 2019. Before choosing Henrico, the company considered locations in Illinois, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Georgia.
